PINK ZINNIA

PINK ZINNIA

only one

oddly placed

in an unlikely crack

between

a driveway

and the sidewalk

seen at a glance

driving to work

in early October

Summer’s supposed

to be over

but there

persistent

pink petaled

just the kind

of flower

my Nana

grew the

most of

though she

loved them

less than roses

their drought

resistant

tough stemmed

architecture

gave her

continuous

color she

never

tired

of arranging

shapes

and sizes

of the zinnia

family

she loved

pink the best

and there she was

oddly placed

lasting longer than

her season

winking

back

at me
